At age 24, Derek Hotsinpiller a received bachelor’s degree from Fairmont State University in criminal justice and graduated from the U.S. Marshals Academy, a feat that’s rare for most young men at that age. In a statement on Thursday, U.S. Marshals confirmed that Hotsinpiller died from injuries sustained in a gun shot to the neck while attempting to serve a warrant to 50-year old Charles E Smith. Smith was wanted on charges related to possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

Hotsinpiller followed in the footsteps of his father who served on The Bridgeport, West Virginia police department for nearly 30 years. Hotsinpiller was a star athlete in basketball at Bridgeport High School and walked on Fairmont State University’s team in 2005-2006.
