SSG Matthew D. Hermanson, 22, of Appleton, WI died April 28, in Wardak province, Afghanistan of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Polk, La. Matt's tour of duty was to be completed in July before his unit was to return to the United States. Matt, not wanting to leave his unit behind, had signed to extend his tour and return home with his unit. Matt was scheduled to return home for a two week leave to celebrate his first anniversary after which he was to return to combat in Afghanistan and return with his entire unit to the United States in November. SSG Hermanson was killed in action just days before his 1st wedding anniversary.
