SGT Anthony R. Maddox, 22, of Port Arthur, Texas; assigned to 10th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.; died July 222013 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany, of injuries that occurred in a noncombat incident in Andar, Afghanistan. He had earned a promotion to sergeant after just two and a half years in the Army. And, he said, he was coming home, Aug. 2013, and would spend the rest of the year at Fort Drum in northern New York state and then the next four years in Hawaii. SGT Maddox, a petroleum fueler suffered 2nd and 3rddegree burns on over 97% of his body. He was being flown to Germany where critical care was available. Army physicians from San Antonio were en route to stabilize him in preparation for bringing him stateside to recover. Unfortunately, SGT Maddox was unable to survive the burns.
